Monolith Burger is a location in Space Quest III. It is accessible at any point he is in command of his ship and light speed is functional.

Roger can stop by, chat it up with the locals (who ignore a limited bipedal species like Roger) and spend some buckazoids for a quick bite to eat. He can also play the Astro Chicken arcade machine (In fact, it is probably a good idea to play the Astro Chicken arcade machine, even if Roger sucks at the game).

While this location is essential for the game's story, it is optional for gameplay. Minimum Score runs and speedruns will skip this location, entirely.

The aliens will not animate (talk, eat, scratch their butt, wag their tail, etc.). This applies to Rooms 28 and 29.

Because SCI0 assigns all their global variables as signed integers; they all have a range of -32768 to 32767. The variable that controls the current food cost will start at 0. As this number increases, it can (eventually) hit 32767, then it rolls back to -32768 and continues to up until it reaches 0 again. In summary; if a player orders enough food at Monolith for long enough, the 'cost' value will roll over into a negative and Roger can not only get his food for free, but will collect a large number of buckazoids. There is no in-game check to limit how high the player can go while ordering 'food'.

To do this, the player should hold down the [6] key while viewing the menu board (This is for the most expensive food item, the Big Belcher Combo). Doing this will take a little over 5 minutes to roll the cost value into a negative. Because your own buckazoid total can impact what you receive, you should hold it down for closer to 6 minutes so that you do not end up with a negative value.

  • This eliminates one of the established soft locks in Space Quest III; it now impossible to run out of money, therefore the player can always purchase an Orat-on-a-Stick and obtain the Invisibility Belt.
  • To see this the quick way, enter DEBUG MODE and set global 244 to 33300 or above (to ensure you do not end up with a negative buckazoid value after the purchase).
  • If the final cost ends up between 10000 and 32767 (when you are done placing an order), the game will (then) round the value down to 9999. If the clerk does not give you a total when you are finished, your cost is a negative value (which is the intended target).
  • Do not forget to order a Fun Meal if you have yet to obtain the decoder ring.
  • Even if the player screws this up and ends up with a negative number of buckazoids, it does not softlock the game; the player can try this again.
  • If the player uses the Big Belcher Combo as the tool to get unlimited, expect the extra bonus scene with Roger getting sick.

I'll have a Big Belcher combo please!

Due to an oversight, the player can receive the Decoder Ring when ordering any meal at Monolith Burger. The way the game gives the player the decoder ring is checking if global249 is set to 1 when eating the meal.

The oversight comes into play in that the game sets global249 to 1 when the player SELECTS the fun meal from the menu, not when the player actually buys it.

Select Fun Meal from the menu. Leave the menu and hit F6 (or type 'exit') to exit back to Monolith Burger proper, rather than pay for your order. Walk back to the clerk and order anything other than a Fun Meal. Despite not ordering it, Roger will still receive the ring.

  • The variable that controls the Big Belcher Combo (global101) is not handled the same way; it will be reset to 0 anytime Roger does not order AND pay for that meal.

Not having enough money (normally) results in the clerk rejecting your order and refusing to take any more orders until Roger leaves the screen and comes back.
  • global247 is set to 0 after being rejected and is set back to 1 upon re-entering the screen.
  • This process can be interrupted by typing in 'exit' before the sequence is completed, allowing the player to re-approach the clerk and attempt to place another order.

Aside from when sitting in a booth, there are no other restrictions when it comes to typing look menu. If the player does this while Roger is in the middle of docking and then leaves the menu screen, they'll be returned to Monolith Burger. However, Roger's view will not have properly updated and will remain in whatever its previous state was. (The weapon system in the case of this gif)

  • If done with the weapon system view, it will allow Roger to fly out of bounds.
  • The regular sprites can be restored if Roger gets caught up in the crowd on the right screen. This does not fix the out of bounds problem, however.

Astro Chicken, under the right circumstances, will clip through the landing pad and fall off the screen, being unable to return. This will lock the game, aside from access to the menu.

At this time, it is unknown how this was achieved.

Have Roger stand just inside as far along the top as possible until the door closes, then try to have him walk left as you enter 'Exit'. If done right, Roger will never climb into his ship and will remain trapped in the airlock. This locks up the game, except for menu access.

  • This can also be done via typing 'Exit' the first moment you gain input after docking.

The game will lock Roger in place while eating along the lest side of the restaurant, but not on the right side. If the player sits down at Monolith along the right side of the restaurant, begins to eat the fun meal, finds the decoder ring and gets up (by pressing left since the parser is disabled) before getting the comment about how 'tasty' the food is, the player will find the item, variable and flag checks have not been updated, allowing Roger to repeat this process without limit, earning as many points as they want.

Normally, the clerk screen and Monolith menu disable saving the game. When exiting the menu, the game re-enables the ability to save. The issue lies in the game does not check if the player's screen prior to the menu was the clerk or not. By saving and restoring here, a minor graphical bug can be seen where the PRESS F6 TO EXIT text at the bottom does not load.
  • Saving is still disabled in older versions while the clerk is speaking.
